Biden’s Trip, New Elections, and the Fight Over Jerusalem
The Jewish State has now entered a chaotic process towards to new elections. Unless Bibi Netanyahu can form a coalition in the current Knesset, left of center Yair Lapid will be ushered in as Israel’s new Prime Minister – serving in a caretaker role. This is happening just as President Joe Biden is set to arrive in Israel on July 14th.
With Lapid as Prime Minister and Biden paying a visit, Jerusalem is no doubt once again on the table. Its true, most of the conversation will most assuredly be an attempt to open a Palestinian Consulate in Jerusalem or even worse – move the American Embassy to Beit Shemesh.
The message for all of us is that Jerusalem is under threat. While no final status agreement can be made during a caretaker government, dangerous precedents can be put in place.
The only way to ensure Jerusalem remains united and in Jewish hands is to continue to strengthen Jewish neighborhoods in the Old City and the surrounding areas. By putting facts on the ground, there is little Joe Biden or Lapid can do.
